![]() With the help of Titus, Sym finds her way back to the truck and to Sigurd. Victor’s demise comes when he tries unsuccessfully to stuff Sym down an ice chimney and then takes off his jacket and enters it himself. ![]() Sym further learns that Victor experimented on her with antibiotics (so no germs would enter Symmes Hole) and that is what caused her to lose her hearing. ![]() He had acted strangely because Victor had poisoned him after he lost interest in the Symmes exploration, and then Victor took money from the bank and ruined their business. Sym is delighted to learn that her father really did love her. Sym figures out that Sigurd is along to keep her company and to be her mate in Symmes Hole. Victor poisons Bruch, sends him outside to retrieve a piece of equipment and drives away. This news doesn’t seem to phase Victor because he paid Manfred with a counterfeit check. Manfred sold Victor an artifact related to Symmes Hole and fabricated the coordinates. She discovers that Manfred is not Sigurd’s father, in fact he is not even Norwegian. She figures out that Victor poisoned the people at camp with his narcotic tea bags. Sym knows the dangers they face – they could easily be gobbled up into a crevice or crash into an ice mountain or fall through the ice. With flagrant disregard for everyone’s safety, Victor drives headlong onto the ice shelf itself. Victor expects the Bruchs to film his discovery of Symmes Hole – the legendary opening near the bottom of the earth that leads to an alternate world inside the Earth. At first, she loves the adventure, but then her excitement turns to concern when most of the members of the group fall ill and radio communication to the outside is lost – could it be sabotage? Her concern increases when Uncle Victor hijacks the camp’s amphibious truck and takes off with Sym and two others – Manfred Bruch and his gorgeous 16 year old son Sigurd. When Uncle Victor, a family friend takes Sym on a surprise, unannounced trip to the Antarctic, Sym is thrilled to be where Titus spent his final days. It doesn’t seem to matter that Titus is 125 years older than she is. She feels comfortable telling him everything. Sym has read all about his life, Antarctica, and his heroic deeds. 373 pages.ġ4- year-old Sym doesn’t have many friends at school, but she has this really great relationship going on in her head with Titus Oates, an Antarctic explorer.
